Basil – Part 1 – Propagation through cuttings

I had some excess basil which I bought for my cooking and remembered reading some where that basil stems develops roots if its kept in water. I been wanting to try it out ever since I read about it. So, I chose some of the sturdier stems, removed the bottom set of leaves and put them in water and placed them on a sunny window.

Here is the result of my experiment:

Day 1
Day 4
Day 7
Day 14
Ready to pot
Plants looked a bit wilted
Day 30 – All the plants are thriving
Day 40
Flower buds start forming
Day 64

Seeds collected from dried flowers, to start the next batch of basil plants.

Seeds from a single pod

So, It was quite a successful experiment and I haven’t bought any basil since then. My pastas, pizza’s, salads and sandwiches are all tasting better with the addition of fresh basil and I love the convenience of picking fresh herbs whenever I need them. 🙂
