Bokashi Composting – Part 2

Stage 2 of Bokashi Composting

The fermented organic pickle we get from the bokashi bin cannot be directly used on the plants because its highly acidic and will burn the roots if it comes in contact with it. To get compost from this fermented pickle we need to process it further in an aerobic environment.
  • We can use a container with holes or a bamboo basket for this stage.
  • Layer about an inch of the container with compost.
  • Mix the fermented organic pickle obtained from the first stage with compost and layer it on top of the compost.
  • Now add another layer of compost on top of the fermented pickle mixed with compost.
  • Cover with a lid or newspaper.
It needs about 4-8 weeks for the contents to decompose into “Black Gold” (compost).
Note: Keep mixing the contents with a rake every week or so to keep the mixture aerated.
Alternative Method to use the fermented pickle:
The fermented bokashi pickle can directly be used in a potting mix by this procedure.
Layer the pot to be used with an inch of potting mix.
Mix the bokashi pickle with compost and layer 2 inches of this mixture.

Now use your regular potting mix on top of this and plant a small sapling or your seed.

Using a small sapling allows time for the bokashi pickle to turn into compost. By the time the root grows to go near the bokashi pickle, it would have decomposed completely to provide all the nutrition the plant requires.
